how to be a good employee at a new job

# Create an excellent first impression:

Almost everyone will make a good first impression, but only a few will make a good lasting impression.” -Unknown

So hear me out. I know the cliche ‘’The first impression is the last Impression’’ can be a joke to us. I have been there. All those unapologetic Instagram quotes have screwed up my mind and yours too. But it is still a thing.

Let me walk you through it.

Let’s say it’s the first day of your Job, and you mess up big,

You’ll have to work x5 harder to get a good reputation bach and that also for a long time. So isn’t it easy to create a first good impression? This will definitely shield all your minor mistakes in the future. Fair warning, It’s not an invitation for making mistakes.

# Accept New Things and Changes

As a new employee, you need to learn to accept new things and changes with an open mind. It would be best if you were more flexible to adapt to change.

Circumstances will change when you join a new Job. You need to modify your expectations and adapt to new situations.

Accepting new situations positively will fill you with positivity which will seem in your action and attitude. Your action and attitude play a vital role in becoming a great employee at new work.

# Arrive on time or early

Being on time is one habit that accomplishes two very important things, It melts away stress and improves relationships at the same time

Being a new employee, you can’t afford to get late,

Arrive on time or an early minimum of 15 minutes for the next few days or months, though you should always be on time. If in the worst time you get late, apologize and promise not to be late from then.

Arriving office 15 minutes early and staying 15 minutes late consider wise during the initial days of a new job.

You can plan your commute and may test drive the route to the office.

Remember: for the new employee on time is late; late is unacceptable.

# Don’t complain about little things

As I told earlier new Job comes with many changes, especially the sitting location and the computer, etc.,

You may not like the location or view of your cabin or the computer given to you.

Don’t complain that you don’t like the computer or the desk area, for now, bear the situation and try to have a positive attitude. You can complain to your best friend at your work but not to your boss.

After some days, you may discuss the issue with your reporting manager.

# Set Ego aside

Ego tends to stand a big Giant wall in the way of progress. So I would recommend leaving your Ego outside the office and pick it up when you leave the office. Actually, It’s not me saying I am just rephrasing a movie dialogue. 90’s Kids: If you know, You know.

You can learn a lot of things from everyone around you. Don’t start your day with ‘’I am better than everyone and ‘’I don’t need anyone to teach me how to do my work’’. It’s never wrong to think about others’ perspectives for just a second.

# Build relationships

Being new to a new job is an excellent opportunity to make new friends and build strong relations. This can be a little hard if you are an introvert. Trust me. It will take x10 more time for you to fit in than an extrovert. But let’s not lose the strings of hope here. Building relationships is not the goal of working in a workplace.

It’s just good to have somebody to go to in case you need any help.

Speaking of help, Helping someone can speed up creating new friends in a new workplace.

# Respect is key

Respecting everyone will not just get you a good reputation at a workplace, It’ll also gain you a good positive image for the rest of your life.

Now you might ask what exactly I mean by respect.

Let’s say it is the first month of your job and you have been exposed to all these new things. You might end up getting into trouble. There is no doubt that it can be an honest mistake, but you don’t have to lash out at anyone if they are pointing out that mistake. I know starting a new job can be a lot frustrating but keep it chill.

# Respecting Other Genders

Many offices have strict rules regarding gender treatment, and I know everything is very politically wrong nowadays. But keep your words to yourself until you fit into the work environment and how everyone treats others.

Try not to indulge in any conversation that disrespects others’ beliefs or even joke about it.

# Try to own the company

So let’s be clear on this. By owning the company I don’t want you to forge some papers to actually own the company.

What I mean is that you should think of your workplace as your own. This is the only way for you to actually take the company somewhere.

It might be hard because then you’ll start to feel that I am the only person who cares about positive progress but this kind of behavior always gets noticed and appreciated.

# Finish your work before the deadline

If you are assigned a project or work, try to finish that on time. In the initial stage, just make sure you do work better than expected,

If the given work can’t be finished before time, let your reporting manager know about the process and assure him you will do your best to finish the work on time. If the work could not finish on time, inform your reporting manager about the progress.

# Be open to change

I know change can be a little hard for our generation because we are fed this toxic food of ‘’This is who I am, accept me or not’’.

We take this quote the wrong way every single time. You should be open to every kind of positive change. It is a matter of negative change. Then you can say this. People who say No to every single change are usually people who don’t want to leave their comfort zone, and it’s a known fact that nothing gets done in a comfort zone.

# Try to be the taking charge guy

It’s a known fact that every human being or a group of people needs a direction if they want to progress.

Let’s say there is a new task that needs to be completed. We know that you might even have your own share of chores, but if you try to be the taking charge guy and just gather some teammates to get the work done, this type of attitude will definitely add plus points to your work progress. Also, this type of attitude will come along when you start to own your workplace.

# Try your best to offer solutions

What do I mean by offering the best solution? We know that we always try to offer the best possible solutions but sometimes we try to avoid those situations in which the work burden falls upon us.

Just remember that if the work burden solves your problem, you should definitely take the chance and do it. Think of it this way you’ll be busy at that time with one task or another, so why not choose the problem-solving one. This will really help you out in being a good employee.

# A strong character is revealed under pressure

We often tend to snap under pressure right, will suck it up. You are a strong human being, not a popcorn. Try to give your best under pressure by staying calm and thinking about solving this problem instead of thinking about what will happen if I didn’t solve this issue.

# Planning

Try to get through your whole week with proper planning. You don’t have to freak out if something doesn’t go according to your plan. At least you get something done.

# Try to learn new skills which match your Job

The first month of the Job can be stressful by trying your level best to learn new stuff from everywhere. Where there its podcasts about how to do a thing right, or your colleagues don’t matter. Just try to add skills to your bag. And also, before I forget, try and build your communication skills from the very first day and even beforehand.

# Never Ignore your health

This tip goes to you in every stage of life. We often ignore our health to achieve something by giving in sleep-less nights usually and forgetting to eat. Well, I do. But what have I learned from this toxic behavior of mine is that I tend to be more productive If I sleep well at night.

If your mind is fresh and charged up, you’ll complete a 2-hour task in 1.5 hours, but if it’s all tired and worn out, it will take 6 hours with a lot of procrastination. So if you went to work with a good night’s sleep, this will show in your work progress that day.

Final Verdict

So these are some of the unspoken rules of being a good employee at work. Being at work is not that different from being in life. It involves the same politics, just in a different color. Try to keep it calm and relaxed because I know that you have got this.
