Cricket: New Zealand Tour Of India ODI and T20I series 2022-2023
The New Zealand National Cricket Team(named: Black Caps) toured India for 3 One Day Internationals(ODIs) and 3 Twenty 20 Internationals(T20Is) from 18th January 2023 to 1st February 2023. India defeated New Zealand to won both the 3-match ODI and T20I series.
- In ODI, the Indian Cricket Team captained by Rohit Sharma defeated the New Zealand team captained by Tom Latham by 3-0 and in T20I, Team India captained by Hardik Pandya defeated New Zealand captained by Mitchell Santner by 2-1.
The ODI matches were held on January 18, 21 and 24, 2023 while the T20I matches were held on January 27, 29 and February 1, 2023.

India defeated New Zealand in the ODI series 2022-2023:
On 24th January 2023, India defeated New Zealand by 90 runs in the 3rd and Final ODI match held in Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore, Madhya Pradesh(MP) and won the 3 match ODI series by 3-0.
Player of the Series:
Shubman Gill of India was adjudged the Player of the series for his aggregate of 360 in 3 innings, which includes a double century in the 1st ODI and a century in the final and 3rd ODI.
Shubman Gill becomes youngest to score 200 in Men’s ODI, and fastest Indian to 1000:
i.During the 1st ODI match of India against New Zealand held in Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad, Telangana, Shubman Gill, aged 23 years 132 days, scored 208 runs and became the youngest player to score a double-hundred in men’s ODIs.
- The record was previously held by Ishan Kishan, who set the record with his 210 against Bangladesh last month at the age of 24 years and 145 days.
- Shubman Gill’s 208 runs is the highest against New Zealand in ODIs. The previous highest was Sachin Tendulkar’s 186 in 1999.
ii.He also became the fastest Indian to complete 1000 runs in ODIs, surpassing records set by Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan. He achieved the feat in 19 innings,.
- He also became the joint second-fastest to 1000 runs in terms of innings alongside Imam-ul-Haq of Pakistan.

Following the victory against New Zealand in the ODI series 2022-2023, India becomes the No 1 ODI team in the International Cricket Council(ICC) ODI ranking (updated on 2nd February 2023).
ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings: Shubman Gill secured 6th spot:
Following his outstanding performance in the ODI series against New Zealand, Indian Batter Shubman Gill climbed 20 places to reach his career-best of number 6 on the ICC Men’s ODI players Ranking
- Virat Kohli is ranked 7th while Rohit Sharma is ranked 9th on the list. Babar Azam of Pakistan tops the list.
Mohammed Siraj claims top spot in ICC’s ODI bowler rankings:
Mohammed Siraj of India tops the ICC Men’s ODI Player Rankings for bowlers following a consistent run of performances in the series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand in 2023.
- Siraj is the first Indian bowler after fellow pacer Jasprit Bumrah to clinch the top spot in the ICC bowler’s rankings in ODIs. Bumrah reached the first position in July 2022.
India defeats New Zealand in T20I series 2022-2023:
India defeated New Zealand by 168 runs in the 3rd and final T20I match held in Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, to win the series by 2-1. This is the biggest margin of victory of runs in the T20I format in a match between full members.
- New Zealand won the 1st match by 21 runs while India won the 2nd match by 6 wickets.
Player of the Series:
India’s T20I captain Hardik Pandya was adjudged as the Player of the Series for his all-round performance throughout the T20I series against New Zealand.

i.India’s previous biggest margin of win, by runs, was 143 which it recorded against Ireland in Dublin in June 2018 and the biggest win margin by a Full Member is 172 runs by Sri Lanka, against Kenya.
ii.In T20Is overall, the largest margin of victory was recorded when the Czech Republic beat Turkey by 257 runs in August 2019.
iii.India’s 168-run win over New Zealand is 8th on that list.
Shubman Gill scored maiden T20I century; becomes youngest to score a century in all 3 formats
Shubman Gill scored his maiden T20I century in India’s 3rd and final T20I match against New Zealand in Ahmedabad. He reached the mark in just 54 deliveries in the 18th over of India’s innings.
He ended the innings unbeaten on 126 off 63 deliveries, the highest score by an Indian in T20I format. Previously the record was held by Virat Kohli with 122 runs off 61 against Afghanistan.
- He became the youngest and 5th Indian batter after Suresh Raina, K.L. Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to score a century in all three formats of cricket.
- He is also the 2nd youngest cricketer to score a century in all three formats after Pakistan’s Ahmed Shahzad, who at 22 years and 127 days became the youngest player to play in formats.
